"Happy city" på Urban Future

2019.03.30 09:35

What if #1: Places vs buildings How to build and design for the well-being of citizens? When looking at our cities’ construction, in most cases it is “the same procedure as every year”. Why do we still build that way, even as we know that there are alternatives that will substantially increase the well-being of the people living there? Let’s have a look and get inspired by alternatives.

Tree-huggers? Why green infrastructure is so much more than just a tree on a street? Only a few years back, people fighting for trees in cities had been laughed at. Today, cities around the world understand the huge potential of its green infrastructure: yes, for the quality of life in general, but also to counter urban heat islands, cope with stormwater, improve air quality, reduce noise, improve health, and so on. Let’s take a close look at some of the most ambitious urban projects.

What if #2: Water and the city Large water bodies can add substantially to quality of living In cities around the world, rivers, lakes, seashores and harbours have been abused for decades. In the past years, however, many cities have realised that these areas have a huge potential to boost the quality of living. We will take a close look at ways to open water to the city and hear from the people behind some amazing change projects.

What if #3: A city for all What if we designed cities from another point of view? Today’s cities have, to a large extent, been planned and built by men. Whether it’s public spaces, buildings or roads – their mindset has shaped the environment we now live in. But what if we changed the perspective drastically? What if we start looking at our cities with the eyes of those, we want to protect the most: women, children and the elderly? Would we make different cities? Most likely. Would everybody feel better? Most likely. Let’s find out how!

What if #4: Sharing society What if we were to share what we don’t need to own? There are several social trends happening at the same time, fuelling the idea of sharing. Citizens around the world are sharing mobility, tools, services, buildings, and even co-create the space they live in with others. Sharing can tackle several critical urban challenges, ranging from affordability and gentrification to new working and urban production. Let’s hear from the brains behind some of the most forward-thinking sharing initiatives from around the world - and ask ourselves, what if we did that?

Setting priorities for leading & developing cities How priorities have been set for decades – and how it will be done in the future Developing cities for the well-being of citizens sounds like a no-brainer political slogan before elections. But is it? When taking a closer look at cities around the world today, we see polluted cities, infrastructure focusing mainly on noisy (and polluting) options, little green spaces, inaccessible rivers & seashores, and so on. But what could change if we changed our priorities? Curious? Then join this session.

Designing for safe cities Safety comes from many sources: experience those you can actually design Safety in cities has many aspects – not at least “perceived safety”. But cities around the globe have experienced wise design options that instantly improved the status quo. We engage a variety of experts and planners who will showcase just how “easy” it is to influence safety if only being considered beforehand.
