Launch Reinventing cities Oslo
2017.12.11 08:57
Oslo is contributing with two of the 49 sites in Reinventing Cities – an interntional competition to develop tomorrow´s climate-friendly cities. The competition is aimed at developers and consultants and will be launched in Oslo the 19th of January.
Reinventing Cities will create examples of sustainable, climate-friendly and innovative town planning and architecture. The competition has been arranged by the C40 network (Cities Climate Leadership Group), where cities from all over the world are collaborating to build momentum in the fight against climate change. Oslo is participating along with 18 other large cities. In total, the competition covers 49 sites.
Competition for purchase and development
The goal is to provide new, innovative, climate friendly and sustainable solutions for the development of urban areas. The ambition is zero emission building focusing on five main criteria: greenhouse gas emissions, transport, material use, water consumption and energy consumption.
The competition participants must be interdisciplinary teams, with expertise in town planning, architecture, property development and finance. After the first round of applications, three to four teams on each site will progress to a second phase, where the participants will develop their concepts and put in a bid for the actual property. The winners will get the opportunity to buy and develop the property in line with their winning proposal. The winners will be announced in January 2019, as a part of the program for Oslo as the European Green Capital for 2019.
Oslo with two sites
The City of Oslo has identified two sites for the competition. One is in the centre of Stovner and the other in Furuset. Furuset is the city council´s demonstration area for the FutureBuilt program which has a goal of developing climate-neutral city spaces and architecture. In Furuset the competition will be for a housing development, while in Stovner the competition participants are free to propose a building program and functions.
Reinventing Cities launches in Oslo the 19th of January. The winning architect and developer from Reinventing Paris, the predecessor to Reinventing Cities, will be at the event to discuss their experience of participating in Paris, and the Oslo´s Vice Mayor for Urban Development, Hanna E. Markussen, will attend the launch. Brian Kilkelly from Climate-kic will moderate a panel discussion and the Q&A session. The competition sites will, of course, also be presented at the event.
