FutureBuilt is a ten-year programme (2010-2020) with a vision of developing carbon neutral urban areas and high-quality architecture. The aim is to complete 50 pilot projects – urban areas as well as individual buildings – with the lowest possible greenhouse gas emissions. These prototypes will also contribute to a good city environment with regard to ecological cycles, health and the general impression of the city.

Why FutureBuilt?
Man-made climate change is one of the big challenges of our time. Our climate gas emissions must be reduced drastically, and this will in turn have big consequences for urban planning and architecture. The Oslo region is the largest urban area in Norway. The region is rapidly expanding, with an estimated population growth of 40 percent in the next 30 years. This implies development of many new houses, workplaces and transport infrastructure.

To support climate friendly urban development the municipalities in the western part of the Oslo region – Oslo, Bærum, Asker and Drammen – have launched FutureBuilt.

FutureBuilt’s vision is to show that climate neutral urban areas, based on high quality architecture, are possible. Its pilot projects are meant to inspire and change practices in both the private and the public sector.

What is FutureBuilt?
FutureBuilt is a ten-year programme with an aim of developing 50 pilot projects including individual buildings and city areas. FutureBuilt will run until 2020, and the pilot projects will be carried out throughout this period.

The pilot projects are set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport, energy and material consumption by at least 50 per cent. They will involve high quality architecture and contribute to a better environment for urban dwellers.

By April 2015 FutureBuilt includes 37 pilot projects dealing with:

  • Urban areas
  • Schools
  • Kindergartens
  • Office buildings
  • Cultural centres
  • Housing projects
  • Ice skating rink
  • Cycling projects
